About Iron Lady
Iron Lady contains 15 mg of iron in a form that offers good absorption and is gentle on the stomach (Ferrochel®). It also contains vitamin C to enhance iron absorption.
Iron plays many important roles in the body, including:
- contributes to reducing tiredness and fatigue
- contributes to the normal function of the immune system
- contributes to normal oxygen transport in the body
- contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin
- contributes to normal cognitive function
Why this form of iron?
Many common iron supplements use ferrous sulfate, an inexpensive and therefore widely used form, but also the one most likely to cause digestive discomfort. Iron Lady contains iron bisglycinate (Ferrochel®), a form where iron is bound to the amino acid glycine. This form was chosen with two things in mind: it's gentler on the digestive system and better absorbed by the body.
In a clinical trial involving Danish women during pregnancy, 25 mg of iron bisglycinate delivered similar results to 50 mg of a conventional iron form, half the dose was enough. At the same time, the women taking iron bisglycinate reported fewer digestive side effects.
Iron Lady also contains vitamin C, which further enhances iron absorption.
How does Iron Lady fit with my daily pack?
Some Venja daily packs contain iron, but the amount varies by life stage. Iron Lady adds 15 mg on top of what your daily pack provides. Please note that two our our packs dont have any iron (Nurture and Embrace)
All combinations are well within safe limits at 1 capsule per day — it is not recommended to exceed 60 mg per day. If a healthcare professional has recommended 3 or more capsules per day alongside Create, the combined intake may exceed the tolerable upper limit. That level of supplementation should always be determined in consultation with a doctor or midwife, as iron can accumulate in the body.

Who is this for?
Iron Lady is designed to be taken alongside Venja daily packs for women with higher iron needs, including:
- women with heavy periods
- female athletes
- women who are breastfeeding once periods return (Nurture contains no iron)
- women who have been advised by a healthcare professional to increase their iron intake
- women during pregnancy who have been advised by a healthcare professional to increase their iron intake
If you're not sure whether you need extra iron, speak to a healthcare professional — a blood test is a simple way to check your iron levels.
How to use
One capsule per day or as directed by a healthcare professional. We recommend taking Iron Lady on an empty stomach in the morning with a full glass of water, or with food if that's easier on your stomach. An empty stomach gives your body the best chance of absorbing the iron; it's best to wait 30–60 minutes before eating or drinking coffee or tea.
Avoid taking iron alongside tea, coffee, fizzy drinks, or dairy products as these can reduce iron absorption. Also avoid taking at the same time of day as supplements containing calcium (e.g. Create, Nurture, Embrace).
FAQ
I'm subscribed to Venja - doesn't my daily pack cover everything I need?
Our daily packs are designed to meet the needs of the average woman at each life stage. For most women, the daily amount is enough.
But some women need more iron than the general recommendation, for example if you have heavy periods, do a lot of endurance training, or if a healthcare professional has recommended higher iron intake after a blood test, including during pregnancy. In those cases, Iron Lady is designed as a supplement alongside your daily pack.
Is it enough to take it every other day?
Yes, that can be a good option especially if a daily dose is hard on your stomach.
Clinical research suggests that daily and every-other-day dosing are similarly effective for iron status, but every other day tends to cause fewer digestive side effects. The reason is the hormone hepcidin: when you take iron, it rises in the blood for up to 24 hours and reduces absorption of the next dose. A one-day break gives your body time to reset.
What makes this iron different from other iron supplements?
Many common iron supplements use ferrous sulfate, the cheapest and most widely used form, but also the one most likely to cause digestive issues like constipation, nausea, or bloating.
Iron Lady contains iron bisglycinate (Ferrochel®), a form where iron is bound to the amino acid glycine. The glycine bond helps the iron pass through the digestive tract without irritation and be absorbed by the body, without upsetting the stomach the way more conventional iron can.
How many capsules should I take?
One capsule per day is the right dose for most women -15 mg, which equals the recommended daily intake for women aged 18–50 according to NNR 2023. If a healthcare professional has recommended a higher dose after a blood test, up to 4 capsules per day can be taken. That level of dosing should always be determined by a doctor or midwife.
How long should I take it?
It depends on the reason. If you're taking Iron Lady to meet your daily iron needs, for example due to heavy periods or athletic training - it can be part of your daily routine for as long as the need is there. If a healthcare professional recommended it following a blood test, follow their guidance, it's generally a good idea to reassess your iron levels with another blood test after 3–6 months.
